College of Engineering, Trivandrum popularly known as CET is the first and best engineering college in the state of Kerala. This college was founded by King of Travancore, Sri Chitira Thirunal Maharaja on 3rd July, in the year 1939, affiliated to Travancore University. In the initial days, there were three branches of study – Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, with an intake of 21 each. First principal of the college was Maj. T. H. Mathewman with Balakrishna Rao and D. L. Deshpande as the faculty. Prof. Joseph Chandra Alexander, who was the first Chief Architect and Chief Town Planner of Government of Kerala, was the master brain behind the design of such a wonder campus. In the year 1960, college was shifted to Kulathoor were it is currently located. Currently this college is affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University or Kerala Technological University.
This college is located at Kulathoor, near Sreekaryam, 13km away from Trivandrum Central railway station. CET is located in a picturesque campus of over 250 acres. World famous Sree Padmanabha swamy temple is located near by just 9km away from CET. The nearest railway stations are Kochuveli and Kazhakkoottam and nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International airport.
Being the best engineering college in the state of Kerala, College of Engineering, Trivandrum posses a very good infrastructure which includes FDLab – a Center of Excellence in Fluid Dynamics, Center of Excellence in Automation technologies supported by industrial giant Bosch, FabLab, Innovation Center, Technical Business Incubator, Electrical Engineering testing lab, Sri Chithira Tirunal Center of Computing, Career guidance and placement cell, indoor stadium, open air theatre, technical library, central computing facility, planetarium and separate hostels for boys and girls. CET offers excellent facilities for research with most modern equipments and laboratories. This college is a research center for five different engineering braches – Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. Central Computing Facility supported by 1GBPS internet connection is a focal point of computing facility shared by various departments. Sri Chitira Thirunal Center for Computing is a well furnished lab with around 100 high-end PCs. The college library with more than 75,000 books and periodicals is functional from 9.00 AM to 8.00 PM on all working days. Centre for Continuing Education is an sovereign body set up under the Board of Governors of the college to promote continuing education programs and to undertake various industrial consultancy services. This Centre is offering consultancy services to various Central/State Government and private organizations. The college has separate hostels for men and women which can accommodate 500 and 400 students respectively. Both hostels provide calm, quiet and favorable atmosphere for the budding engineers to learn and grow. Recreational and sports facilities with most modern equipments are also available in both hostels. There is a warden assisted by two assistant wardens and Resident Tutors are available to look after the well being of inmates in the hostels.
CET is a prestigious college which is affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalaam Kerala Technological University, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. There are thirteen different UG programmes and twenty nine PG programmes along with research programmes offered by five engineering departments. College offers excellent career guidance and placement services combining the three factors for a complete engineer – AMA – Ability Motivation and Attitude. The career guidance and placement unit was started in the year 1984 to guide students for their career development. Every year, hundreds of students are placed in top companies like Cognizant, Infosys, Mercedes Benz, TCS etc. The Placement cell provides excellent training and other facilities to grab a placement in one of the above mentioned recruiters.
